Lava Lodge: Your Private Iceland Retreat

For families and small groups of up to 12 guests (across 6 cozy rooms), we offer exclusive adventures from our private Lava Lodge, a secluded retreat at the edge of Iceland’s untouched interior. Each stay is custom-tailored to your group’s interests, blending comfort, nature, and exploration. Nearby activities include snowmobiling on glaciers, visiting a glacial ice tunnel, relaxing in a geothermal spa, exploring Iceland’s largest lava tube cave, horseback riding, fishing, farm visits, and tastings at a local microbrewery. There are also scenic hiking trails and natural marvels like lava waterfalls just waiting to be discovered. From the lodge, we can arrange unforgettable day tours to iconic regions such as the Golden Circle, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, or even deep into the Icelandic Highlands aboard a custom-modified super truck.

Our super-cozy lodge is perfect for adventurous small groups. Free from light pollution, it’s an ideal spot for stargazing and if you’re lucky, catching the northern lights dancing across the sky. From the patio, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of three glaciers: Eiríksjökull, Langjökull, and Ok. The lodge’s design is inspired by 18th century Icelandic farmhouses, featuring warm wooden interiors and high, sloped roofs. Outside, you’ll find a geothermal hot tub, a fire pit surrounded by cozy seating, and additional gathering spaces that catch the midnight sun in summer and offer perfect views of the aurora in winter.

Inside, a long communal dining table sets the scene for memorable evenings. We serve gourmet Icelandic dinners made with fresh, local ingredients, prepared in a warm, home cooked style. Guests are welcome to join the cooking if they wish, and we’re happy to accommodate all dietary needs with advance notice. In the cozy living room, enjoy a glass of wine, browse through our collection of 600+ vinyl records, or even pick up the guitar, a proper Icelandic dinner party often ends with a sing along.

Want something more relaxed? We’re happy to dial it back, build a bonfire, sip wine, and watch either the northern lights in the winter or the midnight sun in summer from the patio.

This was our second visit under the guidance of Villi, Sigrun and ICEXTravel. There is no place on earth where you can do so many varied things in one week. Each day you can turn the dial up or down between adrenaline and relaxation. We definitely went a little heavier on the adrenaline side as it was my son’s 17th birthday. He said it was the best vacation ever. The Lava Lodge was a new offering from Villi etal that was so warm and cozy (amazing food!) and close to so much adventure out in the wilds! A particular highlight was a helicopter visit to the newly active volcano near Reykjavik. The ICEXTravel experience is worth it’s weight in incredible memories!!!

My family travels very often but we've never traveled before with a guide, we are "get a car and do it ourselves" kind of people. My sister spent 2 days with Villi as a guide in 2014 and passed his name to us. I'm so thrilled she did. It was amazing to turn the reins over to an experienced guide who did ALL the planning and leg work and driving so we could simply enjoy ourselves. Villi met us at the meeting point on time and shook our hand. After 10 minutes we were all situated comfortably in his Escalade an after 1 hour we were all fast friends. Villi relates well with "the parents" and my 20 something daughters. It takes a special person to relate to others as easily as Villi does. We spent 2 precious days at Lava Lodge with Villi and Sigrun who made the finest meals we had in Iceland and made just what I wanted (leg of lamb). Sigrun treated us to trout caught by her father and we felt like family. We toured glaciers, lava tubes, saw puffins, did an amphibious boat tour, black sand beaches, waterfalls and more. Villi planned our trip to meet our needs and was flexible to change things up if we had a whim to! Every parking lot and restaurant he knew locals who obviously enjoyed him as much as we did. Villi took us to a MAGNIFICENT lunch at a tomato greenhouse. I was thinking...tomatoes? Unreal delicious. Villi said he recommends it but not every group wants to go...you simply must! Our week in Iceland goes down as one of my 3 favorite trips of my lifetime. We could not have asked for a better time and we miss our friends Villi and Sigrun already.

This was the second time having Villi guide me in Iceland. This time we stayed at the Lava Lodge and brought my in-laws so we were a family of 8, ages 12-88. Everyone was happy and comfortable, there is so much to do as the lodge is in the middle of a valley with so many of the wonders of Iceland just minutes away. The Lodge is so cozy and Villi & Sigrun cook amazing food. Its like having your own country house in Iceland, without having to cook or do the dishes. They treat you like family. I wouldn't comeback to Iceland without calling Villi to guide me.
